This represents the historic centre of the city, a large paved square where a single, colossal, Mexican flag can be found. Festivals and events can often be found here. The grand Metropolitan Cathedral sits to the rear of the square and took over 250 years to build leaving it today a fascinating mix of architectural styles. To the East of the square is the National Palace, again certainly worth a visit. It homes Diago Rivera’s famed murals, his artwork depicting hundreds of years of Mexican history. It’s even possible to visit the artists former house, the Casa Azul or Blue house, where he and his wife lived and worked. It contains a great number of interesting arts and crafts.
